Like
most of the world Diana had no idea how it had happened. The war in
Europe was being contained by the English. They had withstood the
brunt of Nazi attacks and come through stronger with the help of it’s
Empire and then the Americans. In a sudden twist though the battle of
the Atlantic which seemed to be all but won as troops and supplies
traveled from the America’s to England turned on it’s head.
Transport after transport succumbed to Nazi u-boats. A new model had
been developed that could stay underwater longer and fire more
torpedoes. The bulk of the supplies and men destined for England to
reopen the war on the continent now lay in the depths of the
Atlantic.
Stood
now as she was on a rock face on the southern tip of England she
looked out and saw the largest armada every assembled. It was
supposed to be the Allies going to Europe but now she saw the Nazi’s
approaching. She had been in London relaying intelligence from the
Americans to the English when reports of the armada leaving the coast
of France started pouring in. The English were prepared and had their
Armies amassed in the south for the invasion. It would be a long and
brutal day but if they could blunt their invasion on the beaches and
drive them back into the sea then the war could be turned once more.
With that knowledge in her mind she had quickly changed into her
Wonder Woman costume and adorned her attire. If she could make the
difference between success and failure then she would try,
“Wonder
Woman” came the call behind her. She recognized the voice to be
that of Colonel Foy. Diana turned to face the man. He was in charge
of this particular sectors defense. She found him to be a capable
strategist and welcoming fellow.
“Yes
Colonel?”
“Once
more I want to thank you for your support”
“It
is no bother. I relish the chance to stop the Nazi’s here”
“Estimates
suggest there may be more then three million troops in that flotilla.
If so even with encamped positions and local knowledge our chances
will be slim. Your presence may tip the tide in our favor”
“We
Amazons are always outnumbered in battle Colonel. This will be just
like home” Diana put as much confidence and strength into her voice
as she could. She knew that everyone around was listening in. Also
clearly aware that was the exchange the Colonel wanted to shore up
his peoples will and determination.
Smiling
at the Colonel who simply nodded his head gently in understanding
Diana turned once more to look at the incoming ships. They were being
harried by the remains of the RAF. The ones that could get through
the Luftwaffe’s screen. British battleships also harried the lines
of the flotilla but they were being held by the combination of
u-boats and Germany’s own navy. Damage was being inflicted but not
nearly enough to persuade the Germans to retreat. They would be
approaching the beaches below soon enough where the English army
waited. Hastily dug in trenches and pillboxes had be erected. Mines
deployed and large artillery over looking from the very cliffs she
was on. They began to boom louder and louder into the sea. Catching
the rare landing craft. Diana smoothed her armor. The distinct breast
plate and skirt. The colors red and blue would make her stand out
against the entire backdrop of horror that was about to be unleashed.
She pulled her sheild and sword from her back and raised them in the
air. An unspoken challenge to the Germans. A call to arms for her
allies.
Across
the way on-board a German Cruiser. A tall man dressed in Admiral’s
whites. Looked out over the coming field of battle with his
binoculars. He saw the tall beautiful Amazon raise her sword into the
sky in challenge and bellow some sort of war cry.
“Ah
the Amazon is here. Alert Colonel Hitz” The admiral said from the
side of his mouth. The appearance of the Amazon warrior was going to
make things a little more difficult then anticipated but it also
afforded an opportunity. Some lowly Ensign was sent to find the
colonel and within moments the Colonel appeared with two of his
aides. The colonel was a man in his mid forties. Short black and
graying hair framed a typical German hard jaw. He was a man of great
physical strength. Though he looked more like a runner then a weight
lifter the Admiral knew the man to be powerful. His black uniform did
nothing to betray his physical prowess. Steely blue eyes did nothing
to conceal his obvious intelligence and a glint of harshness.
“Admiral”
The Colonel simply stated. In response the Admiral handed the Colonel
the binoculars and directed him to the peak where the Amazon could
clearly be seen.
“Your
prey is here Colonel”
The
two aids of the Colonel squinted their eyes in a vain attempt to view
as well. They were so similar in attire and appearance that the
Admiral had often mistaken the two for each other. Where the Colonel
was lithe and fit. These two were larger, easily a head taller then
the Admiral and the Colonel. Their build was similarly larger. Large
shoulders framing large powerful bodies.
“Yes
indeed. A bonus for sure. Where would you like me deployed then
Admiral?”
“The
field is yours Colonel. Do not interfere or commandeer any units and
you may move unencumbered through the theater. Your mission to the
Fuhrer has almost as large a significance as my own”
The
colonel nodded at the Admiral and motioned for the two aides to
leave. He left shortly after them. The Admiral watched once more as
the first of the landing craft approached the beaches.
The
fighting was fierce as the first craft were almost entirely wiped out
by the hastily formed minefield. The second and third waves reached
the beaches but the hail of artillery and machine gun fire had them
bogged down behind their own landing craft. Diana itched to get
involved but there was a time and place. The next waves were coming
in and they would overwhelm the first lines. From there she would
lead a concerted effort from the regiments in her area.
Front
lines broke after four hours of constant siege. Men retreated across
a battered landscape. Sometimes over their own friends bodies.
Germans poured onto the beaches and inland. The last of the English
defenders from the front line rushed past her and her troops.
“For
Freedom!!” She cried with her sword aloft in the air above her
head. German troops appeared from behind a rocky outcropping. Diana
and her troops were only twenty meters away dug into a rock formation
that stretched the horizon. There were natural breaks and ways for
people to maneuver them but at each stood legions of English troops.
German infantry spread out and moved uneasily through the stretch.
Hidden from view Diana cautioned her troops on patience and then when
the troops were in an optimum range she allowed her English friends
to open up. Machine guns, riffles, artillery. Tanks stationed some
ways back opened up. Confined as they were the Germans couldn’t get
support from the ships at sea and it was such a small area the
Luftwaffe couldn’t bomb without inflicting harm to their own
troops. Diana without a rifle or any sort of ranged weapon directed
traffic. Such an onslaught of arms towards the Germans and still they
advanced towards them. Behind them came more and more troops. Diana
knew instinctively that this was not a winnable battle. She charged
her troops on more and more hoping for divine intervention. Germans
were almost within range of her sword as she spied something that
caught her eye. Among the onrushing Germans pouring up from the beach
was a squad of about ten. Dressed in a slightly darker shade then the
average trooper. One wore the unmistakable uniform of an officer.
Colonel, if she was correct. They all carried the standard issue
rifle but they also had backpacks that looked like they weighed a
lot. On their sides they seemed to have something like her lasso. Her
attention was so focused on them that she didn’t notice a German
barring down on her. A corporal she had reassuring only an hour or so
ago shot and took out the man. Nodding in thanks she took her shield
and sword and waded in.
Jumping
into the air amid a hail of bullets and artillery shells would never
be a good idea for anyone but she was Wonder Woman. Her leap was high
and long as she brought herself into the centre of the Germans so
that the troops could still fire on the advancing lines. Troops
trained to use rifles were not ever going to be a match for the close
up techniques of a sword and shield. Every thrust and parry produced
a killing blow. Her shield and bracelets deflecting any shots that
were managed to be put in her direction. A ring of bodies formed
around her and in equal measure a ring of German troops. All trying
to get their bullets towards her but each time she deflected them
into another trooper. One thrust from her sword through the
midsection of a German trooper and she turned once more to the ring
of soldiers and found now that they had been replaced by the ten
different soldiers. The officer stepped forward.
“The
America Heroine Wonder Woman” He exclaimed
All
around men fell to the ground. The booming of the artillery and
tanks. The cascade of fire erupting from each rifle from both sides.
To hear him so clearly through it all told Diana that this was worth
her attention.
“Not
American, Amazon” She corrected.
“Ah
yes that is right. Forgive my error” He mockingly sneered.
Diana
was aware that around them the ten soldiers had uncoiled what was at
their sides. Whips, they were whips she realized. The handles seemed
to be connected by a long wire to the backpacks. The officer had a
pack but he didn’t have anything like a whip. With a gentleness of
picking up a baby he placed his pack on the ground and stepped closer
to her.
“We
weren’t expecting you in England today. Our intelligence had your
last location in Washington. This was supposed to be more about
observation then anything”
“Glad
I could surprise you”
“Yes
a most pleasant one”
“Then
pick up a rifle or whatever you want and lets fight” She dared him.
“Oh
I have no hope of besting you in single combat” He laughed as he
said. Almost as if it was a foregone conclusion that he would not
fight her. As he did so, his troops readied to attack.
“So
what? Your going to have your lackey's do it for you?” She teased.
“Something
like that” The Colonel smiled at some unknown joke and stepped back
from her as his troops closed the circle around her. They all
brandished their whips and then attacked.
One
came at her from her right with a slash from his whip. It whizzed
past her temple. As it passed through the air around her head she
heard a faint crackling noise. There wasn’t a moment to ponder this
as another from in front of her slashed out with his whip towards her
midsection. She sidestepped that blow to the left but she couldn’t
avoid the one coming directly from her left. Stepping directly into
it. It racked across her midsection and recoiled around her back. The
crackling noise turning into a direct blow of electricity as it hit
her. Pain blossomed throughout her body but especially where she had
been hit. She sidestepped another blow keenly aware now of the
punishment they could deliver. There were ten whips though and soon
they were landing on her two and three at a time. Her body was racked
with pain as she stumbled to a knee while one whip racked her back
and another landed on her exposed knee. A third whip coiled around
her wrist. Screaming in agony that she was sure the Germans loved to
hear Diana knew she had to level the odds a little. The whip curled
around her wrist attempted to return to it’s welder but Diana
bracing for the extra pain set herself and grabbed a hold of it. In
one fluid and awe inspiring feat of strength she grabbed and
wrenched. The trooper using the whip found himself hurtled backwards
towards the ocean. Diana heard a satisfying splash as that one was
now out of the equation. Raising to her full stature again she evaded
one then two and then three before the fourth and fifth whips caught
her on the shoulder and hip. Grinding against the pain she turned to
the closest solider and with in human speed she closed the distance
and grabbed a hold of him and threw him back towards the ocean. Not
bothering to dither she closed the gap to the next one but before she
could do anything a whip coiled agonizingly around her right thigh.
Diana turned to see where it had come from and was rewarded by the
solider she had just closed the gap between whipping her along her
back.
“AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!”
The pain was excruciating.
Another
whip coiled around her left thigh. Two more coiled about her ankles.
Diana couldn’t help it she dropped to the ground in pain. The
longer the whips stayed coiled around her the more pain they
delivered. A whip coiled around her left wrist and then another
around her right wrist. One wrapped around her left bicep and then
another around her right. Diana was seeing stars when one wrapped
around her throat.
“AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!”
She screamed into the air as electricity arched through her body.
Diana
could see form the corner of her eye the Colonel approaching her
again. Another jolt of electricty screamed through her body causing
her to convulse in pain and nearly drop to the ground.
“Forgive
me for not introducing myself. My name is Colonel Hitz. My men and I
have been training for this for quite sometime at the express
direction of the Fuhrer himself. To think in one day we would
establish a beachhead in England and capture the Allies most
formidable weapon”
Through
gritted teeth and pure determination Diana raised her head to look at
the smug Colonel.
“England
will never surrender. Neither will the United States. I most
certainly wont” The fire in Diana’s eyes caused even the smug and
confident Colonel to step back from her. Lightening pain flared
through her again as all nine whips attached to her came to life.
Howling in pain she fell to the ground on her stomach.
“Such
defiance and strength. A herd of elephants couldn’t withstand what
you have and still you breath and conscious as well. Wonderous”
Though the last word was spoke in awe the rest of it was coated in
confidence and arrogance.
Diana
looked up at the smiling Colonel and offered her own.
“Not
only do I fight for freedom. I fight for justice. I am a proud Amazon
warrior and more then that. I am a Goddess” Diana breathed in
deeply Electricity coursed through her but she didn’t seem at all
bothered by it anymore. Getting back to her hands and knees and then
to a standing position the Colonel backed away in terror. The whips
from the soldiers continued to course through her. Paying barely any
attention to it Diana looked Hitz in the eye. The look in her eye
scared the colonel even more. Before he could react or do anything
with an amazing display of strength she turned and whipped her body
from side to side throwing the soldiers off their whips and some
distance away. Four of them as they landed on their packs they
ruptured and exploded. Two more landed so hard they were out of the
fight. Down six of his soldiers, Hitz ordered his remaining whip
welding soldiers to close around her but she as having none of it.
Displaying once more speed far beyond what they could even see she
disarmed and threw the four remaining soldiers back into the sea. It
all happened in seconds. His entire regiment was disarmed and out of
the fight. Wonder Woman turned towards him and smiled.
“Any
other toys you want me to play with?” Her smile was feral as she
moved towards him.
